The greatest fish – alike to magical Chudo-Yudo from Russian fairy-tales – was caught near Astrakhan in 1827. It weighed 1.5 tons. Even in the beginning of 20th century, one could see a giant Astrakhan Beluga-sturgeon that weighed more than a ton. According to historical witnesses, up to 190 kilos of roe were extracted from each of the giants. Nowadays, the extraction costs of a similar amount of caviar would reach $115 000.
